5 Simple New Year's Cleaning Resolutions for 2021

2020 taught us to expect the unexpected, appreciate the small things and that when there’s a crisis, people buy toilet roll. But it also highlighted the importance of our homes, as a safe place.

A greater focus was placed on keeping our homes clean and hygienic, not only for our safety but our general well-being. And whilst we hope 2021 is going to be a much better year for us all, perhaps those new-found cleaning habits are something to keep.

To get you off to a good start, we propose 5 New Year's cleaning resolutions to make in 2021...

cleaning-schedule

1. Stick to a weekly cleaning schedule

Forever feeling overwhelmed by housework? Rectify it with proper planning. Creating a weekly cleaning schedule with small, manageable tasks, will help you keep on top of everything.

And if you live with others, delegate and share cleaning tasks. You don’t have to do everything yourself. If everyone helps out, you’ll have more time to do the things you love.

Alternatively, call in the professionals. Scheduling regular domestic cleans will help you keep on top of housekeeping tasks. Book a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly home clean to meet your needs.

2. Adopt daily cleaning habits

Carrying out small and simple cleaning and tidying tasks everyday will help to keep your home running smoothly. Make it one of your New Year's cleaning resolutions.

Make the bed every morning

Instantly, your bedroom will look tidier and feel more organised. It’s also good for your own mental well-being and will set you up for a more productive day.

Put dirty clothes in the washing machine

Even if you only do laundry on certain days of the week, it’s still important to make sure dirty clothes aren’t lying around the house. Hang a linen washing bag on the door in each bedroom and ask that everyone places their dirty clothes inside. Even if your kids’ clothes don’t make it to the washing machine, at least it’ll make it quicker and easier for you to transport them yourself.

Wipe down sinks and counters

Your kitchen and bathroom will be two of the most used rooms in your house. To prevent a build-up of dirt and bacteria, wipe the counters and sinks down daily. A quick wipe with a little antibacterial spray will do the job.

Organise your post

Hate clutter? Make sure that any post you receive is opened and dealt with the same day. If it’s something you need to keep, make sure it’s stored in the right place. If it’s not important, shred and recycle.

Deal with the dishes daily

Dirty dishes in the sink will completely ruin the look of your kitchen, even if it’s clean. Wash, dry and put away your dishes after each meal. If you have a dishwasher make sure it’s loaded and unloaded the same day.

Spot vacuum high traffic areas

While you may be able to get away with only vacuuming once per week, high traffic areas like your kitchen will likely need a quick clean in between. Spot vacuum or sweep daily (if necessary) to get rid of dropped foot bits and dirt to keep your kitchen hygienic.

Spray / rinse down the shower

Every time you take a shower, rinse down the walls and spray it with a cleaning solution to prevent a build-up of soap scum. Preventative tasks like this will make it quicker to carry out deep cleans in the future.

Tidy before bed

Make one of the your New Year's cleaning resolutions to pick up any toys or clutter lying around the house before you go to bed. It'll feel so good waking up to a tidier home!

3. Make cutting down on clutter one of your New Year's cleaning resolutions

Scheduling time to de-clutter is important and will help create a sense of calmness in your home. Start with the rooms that you use the most and ask yourself whether you need or use each item. Anything that you no longer want should be donated or recycled where possible.

When making new purchases, ask yourself, is it something you really need? Have you already got something similar? Where will it ‘live’ in your home? Every new item should have a place in your home. Try to avoid buying something you already have, unless you intend to replace it.

4. Commit to seasonal deep cleans

Deep cleaning is good for both our homes and well-being. Benefits include eliminating germs and bacteria, improving indoor air quality, reducing the risk of mould and improving mental health.

Deep cleaning goes beyond getting rid of dust and doing a quick vacuum in key areas of the home. It’s about thoroughly cleaning and sanitising your entire home to make sure it's hygienic. We’re not going to lie, it’s a big job, which is why most people tend to restrict it to just twice per year, usually in the spring and autumn.

If the words ‘deep cleaning’ fill you with dread then why not consider hiring NG1 City Cleaners for the job? We offer a deep cleaning service in Nottingham that involves a full clean of all rooms in your home, including bedrooms, lounges, dining rooms, toilets, bathrooms and kitchens. What’s more, we will spray each area with sanitiser to ensure that your home is free from unwanted germs.

5. Green clean wherever possible

A final New Year's cleaning resolution you may want to consider is switching to green cleaning products wherever possible. Green cleaning can mean different things to different people but essentially, it’s choosing cleaning products that do the least harm to us, as human beings, and the environment we live in.

Some choose to make their own natural cleaners as a way of ‘going green.’ Using items in your store cupboard, like bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar to clean, is a great way to avoid some of the harsher chemicals in store-bought cleaning products. It can also save money. Just be mindful about mixing cleaning products, as it can be dangerous to your health. Read our article on how to make natural cleaners to learn more.

If you’re not keen on making your own natural cleaners, try and buy from eco-friendly brands. Do your research to make sure a brand’s green credentials are certified and legitimate, rather than a marketing ploy.
